"Compliments of the Anti-saloon League of Rochester"

Alcohol: Its Effects on Man, by Haven Emerson, M.D. (1934)

Learn  the "latest" information about demon drink, written by a hero of WWI, and then  Commissioner of Health in NYC. I love the stamp on the cover page, "Compliments of the Anti-saloon League of Rochester"! This hardcover, with dust jacket, can be found in the medical section, priced at $11, at the usual 1/3 Internet price.

Direct from the mouth of N. S. Khrushchov

A reviewer's copy of Khrushchov's The Revolutionary Working-Class and Communist Movement, Selected Passages 1956-63
Buy this 112 page pamphlet for $13 (1/3 the Internet price). Published in Moscow, this pamphlet deals with "the struggle for the overthrow of imperialist rule and the triumph of socialism." Have fun, and find it in the Russian section.

The Crimean War, and the Caucasus- both sold

Two  well reviewed "newish" books:

The Crimean War, a History by Orlando Figes (575 pages, hardcover, 2010) SOLD

The Ghost of Freedom, a History of the Caucasus by Charles King (292 pages, softcover, 2008)     SOLD

The Crimean War was the world war of the 1800s. Four great empires, 1 million dead soldiers, Florence Nightingale and the Charge of the Light Brigade, and yet few people know about this 1853- 1856 war. Learn about it for $7 . (It is in the military section.)
In The Ghost of Freedom, Charles King "reveals how tsars, highlanders, revolutionaries and adventurers have contributed to the fascinating cultures of this ... frontier." Learn about Chechnya, Georgia, Azerbaijan and the Caspian Oil situation for only $6. (It is located in the European history section.)

Many, many, many MacDonald mysteries -SOLD-

We have 20, yes 20 paperback John D. MacDonald mysteries. Remember Travis McGee and his houseboat? This is not a complete set of MacDonalds- that would take another 50 books. Even so we have a lot. Most are kind of yellow, but they are only 50 cents each (except for the two that are in better shape). So catch up on some that you have missed. You can find them in a box next to the mysteries.

Russia's Forbidden Zone

This is the first book blog from the new site!

Werner Knop's Prowling Russia's Forbidden Zone (first edition, 1948, hardcover, 200 pages)

"Disguised as a German citizen and carrying fake papers, Werner Knop crossed secretly into the Russian zone of Germany." This is the exciting story "of what Knop saw, heard and experienced on his hazardous mission" which included talking to both anti-Communists and unsuspecting Red Army officers, and entering slave camps and uranium mines. When he escaped into the American zone he was 40 pounds thinner. He is certainly braver  than most of us. You can check out this book located in the glass case. (The shelf where it really should be is blocked by two tall rows of boxes.) The Internet price was $12, but you can buy it here for only $4. What a steal.

Change brings both tears and smiles

The last of the stuff from the old site came over to the new site yesterday. The remaining books are outside under the overhang. Catch them while they last. They are going fast, fast, fast....

In the new store all the bookcases are up. Now we just have to sort through the boxes and shelve the books. Even with all the chaos you can still have fun here, especially as a lot of the books out are new to the shelves. (Prior to this they were hidden in the back room waiting for space to open up, but now that we have such a larger space they are all out.)

On the sad side, when you come in, look in the window of our old home. You will be amazed. All the inside walls are down, and I mean ALL the walls. How strange it feels to see it this way, especially as the rooms were cleared out only yesterday.

The shop is dead.. Long live the shop!

Did a package truck explode?

Well, we got all of it from Shop One to Shop Two!  Now it's just a case of opening all of it...
